Here’s a brief guide to help you understand UK regulations and make an informed choice.

Types of E-Bikes -Pedal Assist: Provides up power when pedaling, up to 15.5 mph and are UK road legal. 
Throttle Assist: Motor can be used without pedaling, also up to 15.5 mph but not UK road legal. 
Many electric bikes will come with an optional throttle. In the UK, you must not have a throttle enabled when on the roads. Some brands offer a quick enable/disable switch, for changing between on and off road. Ask our team for more details!

Power -UK Road legal electric bikes cannot exceed 250W power. 250W will still feel a lot different to pedalling yourself, but some people do like to go faster. 

Age Requirements -Minimum age for riding is 14.

Legal Requirements -Must have working lights and reflectors. - Helmets are not legally required but recommended.

Registration & Insurance -No need for registration, tax, or insurance for road-legal e-bikes. 

Where to Ride -Allowed on roads and cycle paths, but not on pavements.

Speed Limits -Assisted motor should cut out at 15.5 mph.

Non-Legal E-Bikes -E-bikes which exceed 250W power, pedal assist over 15.5 mph or have an enabled thorttle when riding on the road, would all be looked at as a moped in the eyes of the law. You would therefore need tax, registration and insurance.
